HUTCH GIRLS HAMMER HIGHLAND PARK

LAWRENCE – Hutchinson High is rolling with momentum right now. Unfortunately for Topeka-Highland Park, they were directly in the path of the Salthawks. Hutchinson opened the Firebird Winter Classic tournament Thursday at Lawrence Free State with a wipeout 52-16 victory over Highland Park. The game was never close, as the Salthawk girls led 15-2 when the first quarter came to a close. "Our defensive intensity," said Hutchinson coach Casey Stiggins. "That kind of got us going." The scoring came from all angles for the Salthawks. In the first quarter, Emily Wessel and Jordan Downing contributed five points each. In the second quarter, two 3-pointers from Jenna Higgins led the way. In the third, Shayla DeGarmo had five points, and Kasey Hazell added four more. The second quarter was the most competitive, although still dominated by the Salthawks, who won it 15-8. Hutchinson was up 30-10 at the half. The blowout win allowed Stiggins to give his core players a break in the final 16 minutes. "It was nice to get a couple of the kids some experience on the varsity court, but also a chance to rest our starters so they're halfway fresh tomorrow," Stiggins said. Higgins was the scoring leader for Hutchinson, providing 12 points - all coming on 3-point shots. DeGarmo finished with 10 points. Hutchinson improved to 6-3 with the victory. "You can tell. You can tell in the locker room after the game - each game after Christmas, they're just gaining more and more confidence," Stiggins said. A tougher test awaits the Salthawks today, when they face host Free State, the top seed in the bracket, at 6:30 p.m. "I look forward to playing different teams. Each team brings something different," Stiggins said. "We're excited. The girls are excited. They're looking forward to the challenge tomorrow."
