SALTHAWKS HAVE RECORD BREAKING WEEKEND

WICHITA, Kan. - Last Friday the Hutchinson Salthawks (6-4) tied the national record for fewest pass attempts in one game. The Salthawks literally did not attempt a single pass during the duration of the game – a playoff game; yet they won 64-46. Not only did the Salthawks win, they broke the Kansas high school record for most first downs in a single game (30). 30 first downs without a single pass? Believe it. Sure, 30 first downs without attempting a pass is undoubtedly impressive, but what raises eyebrows is the fact it only took three quarters to accomplish a feat only three teams in the past 48 years have been able to do. Through 10 games the Salthawks are averaging 34.6 points per game in large part thanks to running back Blaik Middleton. Middleton rushed for 258 yards last Friday, which was all he needed to break the Hutchinson single-season record for rushing yards in a season with 2,097 – in counting. The previous record lasted but four years, set by Ben Heeney with 2,083 yards. According to Maxpreps.com, there are only two running backs in Kansas that has rushed for 2,000 or more yards – and Middleton leads the way. To add some perspective, the national average for rushing yards this season is 158.1 as stated on Maxpreps. The Salthawks will square off against good Derby team (9-1) and we’ll see if they’re run heavy approach will stack up against stiffer competition as the playoffs continue.
