FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK-NIEJA CRAWFORD, AI
Nieja Crawford has come a long way in a short period of time in her three-year high school basketball career at Atlanta International.
The 5-foot-10 junior point guard certainly didn’t take very long to reach a major milestone when she reached the 1,000-point scoring mark in the Lady Eagles’ 50-44 loss to Strong Rock Christian Jan. 30.
Crawford is the first girls’ basketball player at AIS to reach the 1,000-point milestone.
“It was a great accomplishment for the school and Nieja,” Atlanta International coach Willie Richardson said. “She has worked hard as a student and a player, but still admits that she has a lot of work to do and several goals to attain. She is a pleasure to coach and a real team player on the court and in the locker room. She has a great work ethic that carries over from the gym floor to the classroom. I’m proud of Nieja and her family and the Atlanta International School community.”
Crawford has been a major offensive force this season, ranking second in the state in scoring among girls’ basketball players with about 29 points a game.
She is also a force on the boards as well, leading the team in rebounding with 12 per contest.
