LOCAL TEAMS GEAR UP FOR STATE GOLF

Hutchinson hasn’t sent a team to the 6A Girls State Golf Tournament since 2011. But for Hutchinson’s three seniors – Emily Wessel, Jazmin Hartshorn, and Molly Proffitt – this isn’t their first rodeo at the biggest meet of the year by any means. All three Salthawks have made at least one previous state appearance heading into today’s event at Topeka Country Club. Wessel, who joined the program as a sophomore, has made it individually every year she’s played. Last year, Wessel finished 28th at Buffalo Dunes in Garden City. Hartshorn, the only Salthawk going to state who’s played since freshman year, also qualified last season while Proffitt earned a trip with Wessel as a sophomore. So this meet has carried a tad different feeling with than the past couple of years. This time around they aren’t worried about the team race. Sure, they all wished the team could have qualified, but just getting any kind of chance to tee off on the grandest stage of the high school golfing season is a thrill. “It was a fun opportunity last time, so hopefully it will be a lot of fun this time,” Hartshorn said. For Proffitt, ending her career with a trip to state is especially sweet. Proffitt said she played poorly as a junior and missed a chance to qualify. This season, she got some redemption and earned ninth place medal in Hutchinson’s regional at Reflection Ridge Golf Course in Wichita. “It feels great to come back as a senior and actually go to state this year,” Proffitt said. Proffitt, Wessel and Hartshorn aren’t too familiar with the track they’ll compete at today. However, they’ll have the trusty notes of the course that coach Charlie Pierce supplies his teams before every tournament. For Pierce, it’s great to send these three seniors out in style. “They worked hard and wanted to get better,” Pierce said. “It’s been good. It’s been a nice ride with those kids.” Like the three Salthawks, Pretty Prairie’s Nikayla Lampkins is no stranger to the state tournament either. Lampkins, who finished 10{sup}th{/sup} last season at 3-2-1 A state, will be making her third consecutive appearance. She’ll play today at Emporia Municipal Golf Course.
